History of Kickboxing

Kickboxing is a full-contact martial art that uses punches and kicks. It began in the 1950s when Japanese karate expert Tatsuo Yamada combined karate with Muay Thai. After early competitions in the 1960s, the first official kickboxing events were held in Osaka.

The sport grew in popularity in the 1970s, especially in America, where many karate practitioners adopted it.

Many kickboxing clubs use a belt grading system, which helps students track progress, stay motivated, and recognize different experience levels.

PMA Syllabus and grading

Here at PMA, we offer our own recognized grading syllabus based on Freestyle Sport Karate (Freestyle Kickboxing). It is suitable for both children and adults and blends elements of Krav Maga, Lau Gar Kung Fu, and weapons training.

With over 30 years of experience in training, coaching, and competing, you’ll be supported at every stage of your martial arts journey.

Both adult and youth gradings follow the same belt order, but youth students also earn half belts (tag belts) to ensure they fully develop the skills needed before progressing to the next level.
